The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program offers you the opportunity to see and experience life in Japan while teaching English in a public junior or senior high school, or while working for a local government office. Help students delve into English and American culture and promote international relations while you travel and enhance your knowledge of Japan and the world. 

For 1999-2000, over 2,500 American college graduates and young professionals are sharing their language and culture with Japanese youth on the JET Program.

Applications for the 2000 JET Program were due December 8, 1999.  Applications for the 2001 JET Program will not be available until September 2000.

Assistant Language Teacher (ALT):  The ALT assists Japanese Teachers of English (JTE) in the classroom. The ALT is often asked to assist in preparing for and judging speech contests, to act as an advisor for the after-school English club and to participate in special school events.
KNOWLEDGE OF JAPANESE IS NOT REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION.
Coordinator for International Relations (CIR):  The CIR works in a local government office. A CIR's duties may include editing and translating pamphlets, implementing international exchange programs, interpreting at special events, presenting cultural events, creating a newsletter and teaching English to governmental employees.
STRONG JAPANESE SKILLS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION.
 
 

 

Qualifications: 
Degree:  Any bachelor's degree by June of the year of departure
Major: Any field
Age: Applicants must be 35 years of age or younger.*
Skills: Flexible, adaptable, personable, articulate, interested in Japanese culture
Contract Details:
Salary: 3,600,000 yen per contract year.
Travel:  Flight to and from Japan is paid for by the program**
Other: Full medical insurance is provided for the participant; Paid leave available. Contract is for one year--renewable twice for a total of three years. Renewal of contract is dependent on agreement of participant and host institution

Interviews are conducted throughout the United States at local consulates in mid-February. 

Final notification is given in late March or early April. Departure occurs in July.
